Luke__bham_homecoming.jpgCPL Luke McIntyre Johnson, with the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Division, returned to Camp Pendleton, California on 10 November 2010 after a tour of duty in Afghanistan and was able to come home on furlough in December. Several of the Birmingham Johnson clan had a wonderful “mini-reunion” with Luke as he came through Birmingham on Saturday, 11 December 2010 on his way from Camp Pendleton, CA home to Paxton, FL. Dad Parley Philip, Jr. came to Birmingham to meet him and bring him home for the Christmas holidays. At the airport were his Great Uncle Wylie Pierson Johnson, cousins Melanie Fay Johnson, Kellet Carmichael, Lillian “Lillie” Carmichael and Joshua May, Orson L. “Pete”, Mary Jean and William Seth Johnson, and, of course, father Parley Philip Johnson, Jr.. Luke and Parley Philip went with Uncle Wylie out to “Pawland”, Uncle Wylie’s property on the Cahaba River in Bibb County for a little while before Luke and Parley got on the road. As Luke returned to Camp Pendleton after Christmas, Melanie Fay hosted a lovely family dinner party at Carmichael Hall in Vestavia. Here are some of the photos made during his visit. Carrie Johnson teaching in Samara, Russia

Members of the Johnson Family are to be found in all corners of the earth these days it seems. Uncle Wylie (Wylie Pierson Johnson) shared the following news about his granddaughter Carrie Haddox Johnson. Carrie sent the photos at right from her new home in Samara, Russia where she will be teaching English. In the first photo, Carrie stands beside pumpkins. (Notice that the pumpkins are gray. Interesting!) The young man with Carrie in the second photo is Ricky, a British teacher. They are in a tram.

Carrie Haddox Johnson, daughter of Jessica Henry and Ben Johnson went to Samara, Russia on 15 October 2010, where she will be employed as an English instructor for one year. Jessica told me the school had English instructors besides Carrie, from Ireland, England and Australia.

Samara, Russia is West of the Ural Mountains and located at the confluence of the Samara River with the Volga River. It is in eastern Russia about 550 miles East Southeast of Moscow. The Volga River flows into the Caspian Sea. Samara was called Kuibyshev from 1935 to 1990. It had a population of 500,000 in 1950. The metropolitan population of Samara, now is about 3,000,000.

Carrie taught in a French language school in New Orleans, LA after she graduated from Tulane in 2008. She is fluent in French. She has been studying Russian. She told me she boned up on speaking Russian with Amandiy, her cousin Dan Hill's wife, during the week before she left for Samara. Amandiy is fluent in Russian and earned an MD in the Saint Petersburg Pavlov State Medical University in 2001.

It's the Great Pumpkin, Emmy Beck!

Emerson Irene Beck recently made her first trip to the pumpkin patch. At about 7 weeks old, little Emmy was just old enough to sit and lean against the pumpkins in the St. Luke’s Pumpkin Patch in her hometown of Houston, TX. (She was born 31 August 2010.) In the photo at right, Emmy seems quite shocked to have a close encounter with “The Great Pumpkin.” Move over Charlie Brown! ;-)

Emmy is the daughter of David Wilson and Karrera Irene Starr (“Kari”) Beck, granddaughter of Sharon Frances Johnson “Sha” Starr and great-granddaughter of Luke and Shirley Roach Johnson (Uncle Luke and Aunt Shirley).

Thanks so much for sharing these adorable photos, Kari. What a great way to kick off our Fall-Halloween-Thanksgiving season here on the Johnson Family website! Family members can contact Kari and David at kistarr(at)hotmail(dot)com or grandmother Sha at sstarr49(at)aol(dot)com. Read More...

Dr. Dan Johnson develops important instrument for psychological testing

Dr. Dan Johnson, assistant professor of psychology at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, VA, has developed a new instrument that is “designed to help clinicians determine more objectively a patient's level of anxiety.” His Attention Control Capacity for Emotion (ACCE) task is scheduled for clinical testing next year at Manchester University in England. In a W&L news announcement published 6 October 2010, Johnson made the following statement about his new instrument:

“Psychologists are heavily reliant on self-reporting to diagnose a patient's level of anxiety. This is a big problem. Although self-reporting is important, patients can distort, exaggerate or minimize their condition. And there is no way to tell if they are doing this. The ACCE task can also be used to track the effectiveness of therapies."

Judy Nora Johnson Davis has a beautiful antique dresser that is rich in Carmichael-Johnson heritage. And it’s for sale! See the photo at right. (Click on it for an enlarged view.) It has a marble top with candle holders. Judy will soon take the dresser to an antique shop in Destin, FL to sell, but she wants to give family members the opportunity to buy it if they are interested. Judy shared the following story about the dresser (additional information in brackets added by the web editor):

As the story goes Great Grandmother, Manora Alzada Summers Carmichael (which my middle name Nora comes from ) brought it to Newnan from Atlanta to get away from Sherman, and she gave it to Grandmother (Neva Kate Carmichael Johnson) as a wedding present, and she [Neva Kate] brought it to Carol Villa in Montgomery, [Uncle Mac and Aunt Gene had it for several years at Carol Villa], and my father [Parley Philip Johnson, Sr.] had it for years in the house at Lockhart, Alabama and then gave it to me, Judy Nora Johnson Davis.

Judy says this is what she was told. If there are corrections or additional information, please let Jean know at johnsonreunion(at)brooknet(dot)com, and we’ll update this article.

It's another fabulous reunion for the Johnson Family!

Thank you Bill Bassett, Dottie Ennis, and Julie Hawkins and families (the family of Uncle Julian and Aunt Neva Johnson Bassett) for another wonderful Johnson Family Reunion! The Johnson family gathered for the reunion on Saturday, 26 June 2010, at Mulder Memorial United Methodist Church, 3454 Firetower Road in Wetumpka, AL - the first in this location. The children enjoyed having their faces painted by their older cousins and playing on a HUGE, fully-equipped playground. Lunch seating was arranged by decade age groups, and thus cousins got to know their cousins of similar age. Of course, the food was fabulous as always with many favorite dishes prepared from the Johnson Family cookbook. The family was led in patriotic and fun family songs by the Bassett family with Gene Burt Johnson Davis accompanying on the keyboard. There were some great family games. One was a real "stumper" where we had to identify those in a collage made up of old family photos! All were identified in the end by sharp eyes and keen minds. Family members came from far and wide to the reunion - including from Florida, Texas, California, and... wait for it... Brazil!

Did you get your copy of the Johnson Family Roster? Bill Bassett did a great job with this. He contacted at least one, if not several, from each family group, and, after many correspondences, compiled a directory of all the living first cousins (grandchildren of Seth and Neva Kate Carmichael Johnson), their spouses and adult children. The directory includes current addresses and email addresses. No excuse not to stay in touch with your cousins now! :-)

Wylie P. Johnson treasures Shrine affiliation

Wylie Pierson Johnson (Uncle Wylie) treasures his affiliation over many years with two Shrine Temples in Alabama. Shriners International is “a fraternity based on fun, fellowship and the Masonic principles of brotherly love, relief and truth.” The organization is well known for its 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children throughout North America that help children with orthopedic problems and burn injuries. Of his years in the Shrine, Uncle Wylie writes,

I was a Noble in the Zamora Shrine Temple in Birmingham 1956-1980. I was Director of the Zamora Greeters Unit 1957 and 1958 and in the Zamora Circus Unit 1960 to 1976 when I moved to Montgomery. I transferred my membership to Alcazar [Shrine in Montgomery] about 1980, but did not transfer it back to Zamora when I came back to Birmingham.

Snow comes to Birmingham!

We shared the photos from Benjamin Seth Johnson of the big snow that hit D.C. in the first week of February 2010. Well, it turns out that Birmingham, AL got its share the next week. No, it wasn’t the massive storm that hit the mid-Atlantic, but still enough to slow things down a bit so that we had a little “Winter Wonderland” of our own. Wylie Pierson Johnson (Uncle Wylie) and his daughter Melanie Fay Johnson shared these photos of the 3”-4” snow that fell at their home, Carmichael Hall, atop Shades Mountain in Vestavia. The snow fell on Friday, 12 February 2010. These photos were taken at 0700 the next morning, Saturday, 13 February. ...

A Snowy Wonderland in D.C.

Over much of the Mid-Atlantic, Mother Nature has dressed the landscape in soft white and sparkling crystal. Yes, this snow can be treacherous, but it is oh so beautiful! While many bemoaned the drudgery of digging out and trudging through, at least one Johnson cousin saw the beauty of it, enjoyed it, and shared it. These photos were made by Benjamin Seth Johnson in the Soapstone Valley. It is an area of Rock Creek Park in Washington, D.C.. That’s right - in the District of Columbia - within the borders of our nation’s capitol! By the way, the lovely young lady in one of the photos is Seth’s fiance, Rebecca Wearb,

See all Seth’s photos of Soapstone Valley here. Benjamin Seth Johnson is son of Wylie Benjamin and Jessica Henry Johnson and grandson of Wylie Pierson and Lurene Hall Johnson (Uncle Wylie and Aunt “Dolly”).

Thanks for sharing these beautiful photos, Seth! Stay warm! ...

Jack Poundstone named Montgomery All-Metro Player of the Year

The accolades for young athletes in the Johnson family just keep coming! Jack Poundstone has been named the 2009 All-Metro Player of the Year by the Montgomery Advertiser in 1A-4A football. The 6-foot-1, 175 lb. senior led the Trinity High School Wildcats as starting quarterback for the past two years. This year the Wildcats finished the regular season undefeated and ranked No. 1 in their division. Jack passed for 3,026 yards and scored 28 TDs. He rushed for 623 yards and scored seven rushing TDs. His career total of 6,015 yards ranks Jack in the AHSAA’s top-10 players for total offense. He completed 251 of his 372 passes this season which is the third highest number of completions in a season in AHSAA history. He was named first-team All-State quarterback in the 3A division. See the many football milestones set by Jack Poundstone as compiled by Wesley Lyle in this Montgomery Advertiser article. It’s good reading that includes an interview with Jack on several topics. (Believe it or not, his favorite sport is baseball!) The photo of Jack here, taken by Julie Bennett, appeared in that article.

Jack Poundstone is the great-great-grandson of Dave Johnson who was brother of Seth Johnson. Jack is a fourth cousin to another great Johnson football player on whom we recently reported, Jake Albritton. These family relationships can be quite complicated, so Wylie Pierson Johnson (Uncle Wylie) shared the genealogical chart below to help clarify. Thank you, Uncle Wylie! These and other reports here on the Johnson Family website prove that there is definitely a strong athletic streak in those Johnson genes!

Congratulations, Jack!
